Williamsport's Millionaires' Row

Williamsport’s Millionaires’ Row

$26.68

Williamsport was once known as the lumber capital of the world, claiming to have more millionaires per capita living there than anywhere else in the world. Made fashionable by visionary Victorian-era entrepreneur Peter Herdic and his talented personal architect Eber Culver, Williamsport’s West Fourth Street became the place to live and visit celebrities and socialites, including Annie Weightman Walker Penfield, the richest woman in the world in her day. These vintage postcards feature scenes varying from the lavish Victorian homes the nouveau riche built from the spoils of the bustling lumbermills and offshoot industries to the resplendent houses of worship where the rich and the poor stood side by side. Williamsport’s Millionaires’ Row records the pinnacle of Williamsport’s wealth and glory days, highlighting the homes of the Millionaires’ Row National Register Historic District.

Meet the Cole brothers, charismatic country boys with more money than Godhalf moonshine and half martini. Roland, the younger, is running for governor of Tennessee, while J.T. maneuvers to bring a full-fledged worlds fair to the small city of Glennville. To the dismay of the old guard, the fair succeeds, making the Coles among the most important men in the state. All that stands between them and grander ambitions is an investigation into how their bank made all that money so damn fast.

Life in the fast lane has taken its toll on the Coles families; their wives and mistresses are among the sharpest, sassiest creations of recent fiction. The quiet center of the story is Mike Teague, the Coles advisor, who knows one of those women too welland also where all the bodies are buried. Here is a portrait, raucous yet nuanced, of what the south has been, and what it will become. The Millionaires, with its wry, sophisticated narrative voice, a voice in full control, is the best, most fully accomplished new novel I have read in perhaps three years. . . . It is serious business and it is very good. This expansive, smoothly flowing novel offers a rich look at family dynamics and overweening ambition.Major’s depiction of a Tennessee evening is reminiscent of James Agee’s hypnotic Knoxville: Summer of 1915.Since the new rich often get short shrift in fiction. . . Mr. Majors’s approach is actually refreshing . . . Giving us profligate bankers who borrow badly, The Millionaires is a timely work.Majors pairs a cast of likable characters with a strong setting, elements that set this novel apart.[There are] flashes of absolutely brilliant prose. . . This is a story of the New South, and of the politics, the financial shenanigans, and the competitive mind games that bring wealth and power to a handful of determined men. [Majors's] description of the beautiful Appalachian mountains is a plus.Remarkabl@ë…¸Qìÿ¾Úx

Bramwell: A Town of Millionaires

Bramwell: A Town of Millionaires

$26.8

Bramwell, the pride of West Virginia’s southern tip, sprang up almost overnight as a result of the 1800s coal-mining boom. It boasted more millionaires per capita than any other town in this country. These vintage photographs tell of devastation by the 1890 flood and the 1910 fire. In 1957, a warm January caused the Bluestone River to cover Main Street and limited transportation to rowboats. Herein, stories unfold of the early days when coal was king and cash flowed as freely as the river. A few old-timers remember watching the bank janitor as he pushed a cart full of money down Main Street to the train station every week. The bankbrfinanced Washington’s Burning Tree Country Club and the University Women’s Club. By the start of World War II, Bramwell’s millionaires were the students attending Bramwell School. This volume includes photo memories showing how the school and community were joined at heart.
